FINANCIAL INFORMATION AND RESOURCES

Protecting your compensation

In some cases, receiving compensation might attract attention from others offering financial advice or services. It can help to take time and make decisions carefully.

Be careful with financial offers

After compensation payments are announced, some people may receive calls, messages or visits from people or organizations offering financial services. Examples may include:

  • Investment offers

  • Loan offers

  • Requests to manage or invest your money

  • Requests to sign financial agreements

You are not required to accept these offers. You may choose to take time and ask questions before signing anything.

Take time before signing documents

Many financial offers may ask you to sign documents or agreements. Before signing anything, it may help to:

  • Read the document carefully
  • Ask questions if something is unclear
  • Take time to think about the decision

You may also wish to speak with someone you trust before signing documents.

Speak with someone you trust

You might find it helpful to discuss financial decisions with trusted people. This might include:

  • A family member
  • A trusted friend
  • A community member or Elder
  • A financial advisor
  • A lawyer

You can choose the type of support that feels right for you.

Protecting your personal information

Protect yourself and don’t share personal information or details with people you do not know. Examples of personal information include:

  • Bank account details
  • Identification numbers
  • Financial records

If you are unsure about a request for personal information, you may choose to take time and ask questions before sharing it.

If something does not feel right

If an offer or request makes you feel uncomfortable, you may choose to pause and take time to consider your options.

You do not need to make decisions immediately. You may wish to speak with someone you trust for advice or support.
